about

'Wambuul bila' was developed from field recordings of the Wambuul* Macquarie River in Central West New South Wales, from the wall of Burrendong Dam above Wellington, through Dubbo to the Timbrebongie Bridge downstream of Narromine—on the lands of the Wiradjuri Nation. In all, 10 field recording sites along 170km of the river were sonically explored over several months. Using manmade structures across the river as conduits of riverine sound, subsurface and signature atmospheric sounds have been layered into a narrative about the river's past, present and future.

*Wambuul is the Wiradjuri name for the Macquarie River, adopted as a dual name in 2021.

A spoken word version of this soundtrack, with recorded free verse responses to the river by artists Kim V. Goldsmith, Robert Salt, Milena Sallustio and Suzanne Foran, was released on World Rivers Day, 25 September 2022. It can be heard at eco-pulse.art/wambuul-bila/
